Finishing school has begun!
Friends! I apologize for the absence; I’ve been travelling for the past week and while I’ve still been researching the feminine arts, I haven’t had much time to write them down in blog form. But, today, I started a week-long etiquette program — aka finishing school is in! It is FASCINATING.
First, there are three other women, from three different continents, in the course, plus me for a fourth. Different routes have brought us to the school, but we all want to learn to be ladies. I’ve left my handbook at the school because I didin’t want to seem like too much of a keener, but I can relay one fun etiquette fact that we learned today, which is useful at parties — and who doesn’t like a party trick, hmmm?
When you arrive at a party, generally you want to be noticed. (If you don’t, why are you at that party?) So, when entering, it’s best to move to the right of the entrance, and pause for 10 seconds or so to scan the room. Look for the hostess, whose duty it is to introduce you to others, but also scan the room for other friendly faces, and the bar. Decide whether you’re going to eat or drink — doing both presents problems when you’re introduced to someone and need to shake their hand. I know this too well from personal experience. The instructor today said, always best to opt for a drink, and since I’m in London right now I’d have to agree.
And, your drink should primarily be held in your left hand to leave your right hand free to greet people. You can, of course, use your right hand to bring the glass to your lips, but you don’t want it cold or wet, because who wants to shake a cold, wet hand?
Et voila. Party circuit, here I come.
