Wearing clothes that fit is more important than being on trend
The following may seem obvious, but sometimes you need to be reminded of the obvious. This is a story about fit, or perhaps a lesson — one that I’m learning again and again, and has taught me that above all, no matter your leanings style-wise, it’s getting the right fit that matters most.
I’m reminded of it every time I shop for shoes (I swear my feet have grown at different rates), because I’m having a helluva time finding a pair that fits. I was reminded of it when dress shopping — the better the fit, the better I (felt I) looked. And strangely, I was reminded of it at the optometrist’s office not too long ago. For years, I’d worn Bausch + Lomb contacts; she put me in a pair of Acuvue Oasys and for the first time in a long time my eyes felt like they could breathe. It dawned on me that it wasn’t contacts that bothered me, but that I wasn’t wearing the right ones.
And lastly, I’m reminded of it every time I look at French Voguettes. I would not describe the style that runs throughout the images are particularly feminine or even put together, but in every photo the women are wearing clothes that fit them perfectly, and so even if it’s ripped jeans and a T-shirt, they look both feminine and put together. A simple, perhaps obvious, revelation, but an important one.
